I’m Matt Ruta: a photographer, filmmaker, writer, and professional mountain athlete based in Golden, British Columbia.

My career in the outdoors has been an anthology of diverse chapters; from international ski cross and ski mountaineering racing, freeride skiing, first descents, steep skiing, and human-powered travel through technical mountain terrain on several continents. These days, my focus is on remote ski lines and mountain stories. Primarily in Western Canada, but also abroad when passion and opportunity strike.

I first came to photography and writing as a way to better understand my own experiences in the mountains. A camera and a notebook helped me notice what I might otherwise glide past.

That practice has grown into still and motion work for documentary, commercial, tourism, construction, and adventure projects. I’m especially drawn to stories that happen in rugged and fast paced environments. Worlds where access, timing and logistics matter. Subjects where the camera has to keep up without getting in the way.
